Weight Training for Speed

 

When people think of strength they usually think of maximum strength or the maximum amount of force a muscle can produce. There is more to strength than just the amount of weight you can lift.

Elastic strength is the ability of a muscle to exert force quickly and strength endurance is the ability of a muscle to repeatedly apply force with minimal fatigue. All three types of strength maximal, elastic and endurance are integral to speed work because sprinters need to be able to generate maximal force quickly and repeatedly to be fast. Bein faster is always better.

Building strength can be done in the weight room but there is more to speed than just building strength. The combination of strength, flexibility, mechanics and nervous system development need to be built over time to get maximum results.
